About Us Growing Processing Sustainability Farm Tour Chocolate Bars

We are looking for socially responsible investors who want to support sustainable agriculture.

Garden Island Chocolate is looking for investors who want to reconnect with the soil. One simple solution to the world-wide financial meltdown is growing your own food. Investing in growing and making chocolate on Kauai is socially responsible. We believe in "patient capital" and "slow money" because it is the reliance on rapid growth with rising debt that created our recent global financial crisis.

Our motto is "Good soil makes good chocolate". Garden Island Chocolate puts soil fertility and sustainability into our investment strategy. We are focused on resource management conservation, knowing full aware that we have a limited supply of soil, water and air. Ecosystem preservation and restoration creates great chocolate. Soil fertility is also one of the most valuable tools we have to fight global warming. It's the soil and its carbon-absorbing plants on which we depend to sequester damaging carbon from the atmosphere.

Investing in real enterprises in real communities is tangible and solid. Investing in paper or securities not tied to directly to something tangible leads us to our current predicament of the biggest market failure since the Great Depression. We are at the verge of the structural limits of our social, economic and natural life systems. The Earth's natural ecosystems to tolerate maximum population is in question. We are faced with limited resources that we have to take care of.

Investing in sustainable agriculture helps to change the cultural, industrial and economic systems that create an extremely unbalanced distribution of wealth and resources. Our society is now feeling the effects of an economy based on complex schemes for making vast profits quickly. Garden Island Chocolate will grow at the speed we plant cacao trees, naturally and sustainably. It takes cacao trees 3 to 4 years to bear fruit so we are prioritizing the social good over a quick return. We do not ask ourselves how fast can we compound the financial returns on our investments. In nature there is no concept of hoarding. We nurture our cacao orchards and in return they offer us life sustaining nourishment indefinitely.

Garden Island Chocolate has a vast potential for growth, but a slow growth, where the return horizon is longer and where the risk and rate of return are reliable. What does our value system say about investing? Do we invest to maximize returns or do we invest for the good of the planet and people? Garden Island Chocolate is not only committed to growing superior cacao, we are striving to cultivate the consciousness of what is means to live more sustainably.
